About

Mission Statement

Build Sound Community is a non-profit organization designed to build sustainable community. We are dedicated to teaching skills in the building trades including carpentry and metal work. We focus on creating tiny homes, designing custom speakers, teaching sound design, designing mutant vehicles for Burning Man and utilizing performance space to encourage local artists to exhibit before small audiences. We are dedicated to providing an alternate space for people to gather and learn.

We are building community with the following:

1) Creative Space

We utilize a large maker space to create projects and hold events.

2) Tiny Homes

We use the building of tiny homes to teach skills in the building trades.

3) Burning Man Mutant Vehicles

We teach participants how to design and work with metal and wood by building a fleet of Burning Man art cars.

4) Sound Design

We design and build custom speaker cabinets and sound solutions.

August 2016 Vision

Build Sound Community utilizes 3,500 sqft of warehouse space in West Oakland. We are well along the design phase of our first tiny homes project. 8 active participants are working together for three 8-hours shifts every week to design and source our first house. We have created the CAD model of the home and have purchased the trailer. We plan to begin framing by the end of the month.

We are currently building 4 Bill Fitzmaurice “Tuba 60” bass cabinets for a customer. We are using these to demonstrate the sound properties of tuning bass signals between 20 and 160Hz. Three students meet once a week and will complete all four by the end of the month.

Burning Man 2016 is just around the corner and a number of art cars (mutant vehicles) are stopping in for some last minute adjustments. Each vehicle will stop into the shop for less than a week while their crew receives assistance from our resident experts. We primarily focus on their lights, fabric, and safety features but also assist with automotive improvements. Anywhere from 5-50 people are working on these projects over the course of a week.

We will host two small parties and one large gala to generate funds and to highlight our current and upcoming projects. The parties will provide opportunities for our sound design students to experience the fruits of their labor. The gala will be in conjunction with a number of other groups who support our vision and wish to perform publicly.
